Vishwachi – Brachial neuritis 

Brachial neuritis is condition where nerves belonging to the brachial plexus(the group of nerves that originate from the back bone of the neck, which runs through the arms) become damaged or irritated that results in pain around the shoulder and the arm area. In Ayurveda , there is a condition with the name “Vishwachi” which can be correlated with Brachial neuritis

Definition

The word Vishvachi has been derived from the root word ‘vishwa’ which means ‘dhatu (tissues)’ and ‘Anch’ refers to paralysis of the arm and back . Vishwachi is a disease which is caused due to vitiated VATA DOSHA on affliction towards the Kandara (muscles, tendons & ligaments) that run to the tip of the fingers from behind the root of upper arm, causing restriction of the movements and depriving them of their ability of flexion or extension causing severe Pain.

Causes for Vishwachi 

  • Excessive consumption of of Adhaki (pigeon pea), Bisa (Nelumbo neucifera), Chanaka (bengal gram), Nishpava (flat bean), dry vegetables. 
  • Intake of dry, light and cold food articles.
  • Constipative diet intake .
  • Food intake at improper time . 
  • Whirling, throwing or pulling the heavy objects .
  • Heavy exercise that can cause strain to the arm . 
  • Doing Long driving . 
  • Abnormal gestures . 
  • Work at night .
  • Excessive swimming, carrying excessive weight, Injury etc. 

Sign & Symptoms of Vishwachi 

  • Loss of movement of extremities 
  • Tiredness in arm and forearm 
  • Restrictions in functions of arm and forearm 
  • Pain starting from the neck & radiating to the shoulder, dorsal aspect of the arm, forearm & palm
  • Stiffness, pulsation & pain in the area of the arm 
  • Heaviness & numbness of the arm  
  • Stabbing & burning type of shoulder pain, which can extend to arm and hands. 
  • In a few cases, weakness in the arm
  • In very rare circumstances, this condition may lead to paralysis. 

Treatment Methods in Ayurveda

  • Shamana treatment – using internal medications
  • Shodhana Treatment – taking help of Panchkarma therpies like Basti, Virechana, Nasya,Raktamokshana etc.
