Epilepsy – Ayurvedic Perspective

Epilepsy is a condition in which there is transient loss of consciousness ,found for certain period of time which may last from few seconds to few minutes. Epileptic attack is abrupt with excessive electric discharge of cerebral neurons.

As per Ayurveda, this problem is corelated with a condition called ‘Apasmara Roga ’. According to Acharya Charaka ,this condition is a disorder with the characteristic features of occasional loss of consciousness associated with suspended memory, intellect and mind. 

Causative Factors Epilepsy in ayurveda

  • Consumption of unwholesome food and habits for a longer duration by person who has delusional mind
  • Grief, Passion and Anger for long duration
  • Fear in Subconscious mind
  • Hatred in Subconscious mind
  • Doing Unethical regimens and celebrations  
  • Unethical recreations
  • Debilitated mind 
  • Irregularly overexcited doshas

Samprapti of Apasmara roga (Pathogenasis )

Due to the above causative factors ,Doshas get aggrevated .These Aggravated doshas then get accumulated in brain and produce the features based upon Doshic predominance. Then it exerts illusion in the mind and visual hallucinations and seizures . 

Presentation during Fit attack 

This condition is presented with out warding tongue, deviation of the eyes, dribbling of saliva with froth from the mouth, tonic and clonic movements of limbs etc. Later it passes on to relaxation phase where the person goes to normal condition .

Predromal symptoms

  • Contracted eyebrows 
  • Continuous deviation of the eyes 
  • Auditory hallucination 
  • Salivation and nasal discharge 
  • Loss of interest in food 
  • Sensation of spasm or congestion of heart 
  • Gurgling sound in the abdomen 
  • Fatigue 
  • Pain all over the body muscles and joints 
  • Hallucination 
  • Feeling of darkness 
  • Fainting 
  • Giddiness 
  • Dreams of intoxication, dancing, stabbing, falling

Sign & symptoms of Epilepsy

  • Convulsions with teeth biting  
  • Dribbling of frothy saliva 
  • Expiratory dyspnea 
  • Roughness in the body 
  • Red or black discoloration of the body surface 
  • Involuntary speech or murmuring 
  • Head retraction to one side 
  • Constriction of the fingers 
  • Unstable movements of the limbs etc.

  • Vataj
  • Pittaj
  • Kaphaj
  • Sannipataj
