Osteoarthritis -A Joint problem

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease which is very common form of arthritis .This may affect any joint but most likely affect weight bearing joints like knees , feet etc.This form of arthritis commonly seen in old age persons & progress as the age increase. Generally the symptoms progress slowly over years The symptoms interfere with work or daily routine activities of a person suffered from this problem .

Cause behind Osteoarthritis

Due to Continuous loss of cartilage as a result of degenerative process within joint is found to be the main cause of this condition. As the cartilage starts to erode , its particles produce irritation in joint lining (called Synovium) causing stiffness & inflammation. Bone overgrowth at the joint edges produce bone spur which is responsible for pain & interfering joint movement. Eventually the cartilage becomes so rough & pitted that the joint movements get restricted

Osteoarthritis as per Ayurveda

Osteoarthritis can be Correlated with Sandhivata Roga. As per Ayurveda , Sandhivata problem occurs due to vitiation of Vyanavata ( one of a type of Vata dosha ). Vyana vata governs all joint movement . When this aggrevated vata dosha enters in the joint , it starts drying the liquid content of the joint & the cartilage which is smooth becomes rough due to dry nature of Vata dosha . The rough cartilage starts to erode due to excessive dryness & friction that results in pain & swelling in joint.

Sign & Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

  • Pain, stiffness & tenderness in affected joint
  • Swelling in joint
  • Crepitus ( cracking sound ) in joints while movement
  • Primerly pain in any joint which worsen during activity& get relieved on rest is the most common symptom. As the disease advances, the pain may persist even when the joint at rest
  • Limited range of movement
  • Usually big joints involved like knees, ankles etc.
