Urticaria – Ayurvedic View

Urticaria is a skin problem commonly known as Hives where a kind of skin rashes develop .Urticaria rashes are red ,raised associated with itching .They vary in size which appear and fade repeatedly.If the rashes appear more than 6 weeks ,this problem consider as Chronic Urticaria. The most common cause is consider the allergic reaction .

In Ayurveda , this problem can be correlated with a condition known as “Sheetapitta” which bears similar symptoms.

Causative factors as per ayurveda

  • Excess intake of salty, Pungent & sour food articles.
  • Excess Consumption of Mustard.
  • Exposure to cold wind & contact with cold substances .
  • Sleep during daytime
  • Improper Vaman karma( type of panchkarma)
  • Winter and rainy season
  • Due to bite of insect
  • Contact with poisonous insects.

Pathophysiology

Pathophysiology of Sheetapitta – Due to above causative factors, there is aggrevation of Vata & Kapha doshas in the body .These doshas in turn mixed with Pitta dosha . They start circulate and lodge in external surface of body i.e in skin layer and produce red skin rashes associated with itching. As presentation of this problem resemble the condition of Urticaria so corelated with it .

Sign and symptoms

  • Rash appear as bite of Nettle sting (Cardinal sign as mention in Ayurveda)
  • Intense Itching
  • Pricking sensation over affected area.
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Burning sensation
  • Fever

Home remedies

  • Add half to one teaspoon Turmeric powder in one glass leukwarm milk and drink
  • External application of aloe vera gel also helpful

Conclusion

This problem can be effectively managed in Ayurveda as has specific line of treatment which work over the root cause of this problem with some specialised ayurvedic formulations .
